All my life I have loved animals and I have been inspired by them. I spend a lot of my time visiting zoos and aquariums around the world and since about 2006 I have been very into SeaWorld. I know so much about the company, the animals, the trainers. And yes I am very aware that there are many people who are against keeping animals in captivity. I sometimes am against it too if the facilities are cruel and the animals are treated badly. At SeaWorld, the animals are given suitable enclosures, they are very well looked after and the people who work there have a huge passion for these animals and will do anything for them.
I am not just saying this, I know for a fact. In late 2013 I spent a total of 10 days at SeaWorld Orlando, one of them was completely behind the scenes. I witnessed first hand how passionate these people are for the animals they look after. Any animal career isn't usually high in pay, so it is ridiculous to say that the people are only there for the money. Working with animals is more than a job, it's not just about earning the money. It's also about creating a bond with the animals and the amazing relationships you build with them, the fun you have with them, the love you have for them and the trust they have for you.
I believe that the animals at SeaWorld are well looked after. I have done heaps of study into stress signs and stereotypical behavior for all sorts of animals including orcas. While I was at SeaWorld, I experienced none of that. In between shows the whales were given access into every pool and they could do what they wanted. They were often playing with each other, interacting with trainers or people at the underwater viewing window (which is huge enrichment for them) or just playing with toys. Sometimes they were even having a snooze!
Where I am going with this is that the whales are not abused or treated badly as Blackfish may make you think. They are loved and very well cared for. Trainers spend hours and hours every day interacting with the animals, whether it's physically rubbing them down or playing with a ball, or just sitting down together and looking into each others eyes. These sessions that the trainers do with the whales are very important to creating a relationship between trainer and whale and without these relationships, the shows wouldn't even be possible.
I have created this website to tell people just how good SeaWorld is and how much they really care for their animals. And also to point out the several lies that the film Blackfish makes. This is a very serious thing for me, and I stand with SeaWorld and I will continue to support them and the amazing work they do.
